Doin' the Karaoke Hodgepodge!

It's Hodgepodge time!  Or, rather, it's bleary-eyed-sitting-in-the-hospital-with-my-mom hodgepodge time... yawn... join me, friends, as we pray for my dad, who is having open heart surgery today, and for my mom and I, as we wait together and pass the time in the hospital today!  What better way to pass the time than with a few Hodgepodge questions? :-)  And if you'd like to join in on the Hodgepodge fun, hop on over to Joyce's page.

1. It's  been said that one small positive thought in the morning can change your whole day. Do you think that's true? Do you find that an easy exercise most mornings? What's something positive you told yourself today? If you missed that boat, what's something positive you could tell yourself tomorrow?

I do think that the way you great your day makes a difference - sometimes I have to be a little more deliberate in being cheerful, putting on music, not watching the news, doing Bible study, etc.  I love the motto of "When you get up in the morning, may you say 'Good morning, Lord' rather than 'Good Lord, it's morning!'"

2. There will be karaoke at the next party you attend...are you in? Or will you be faking a sore throat?

Oh yes, I am SO in... and I'm belting out "Living on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi or "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey

(and I'm rocking my super sexy black heels too, by the way... hehehe...)

3. January 29th is National Puzzle Day...what's something you've found puzzling recently?

Too many things to write down.  Mainly, our job situation, the government's impact on it, my own job situation, family dynamics, etc.

4.  Jigsaw, crossword, acrostic, logic, sudoku, word search...what's your favorite kind of puzzle, and when did you last work one?

Logic puzzles - I have a fun app called "Take it Easy" - and I have no idea why it is called that - but it's a fun puzzle app!

5. Recently a writer by the name of Amy Glass ruffled feathers with a post she wrote saying she looks down on young women with husbands and kids and she's not sorry. Among other things, she says women will be equal with men when we stop saying house work and real work are equally important. You can read the whole piece by clicking here.

What say you? Do you think men and women are equal in the 21st century? Why or why not?

Wow, I found her article quite harsh...and in my fuzzy state of mind at the moment, I can't really voice my thoughts coherently, other than to say that I really do feel sad for her... I know that getting married and having babies may seem ordinary by some standards, maybe even "giving in" to the societal pressure for the "norm", but I still maintain that I have not had any job ever that has been more challenging than to get married and stay married, and to have children and maintain the budget, groceries, and yes, laundry and everyday tasks that may seem simple, but take an enormous amount of finesse to maneuver on a daily basis.  And nothing, NOTHING, is more rewarding than the feel of my child's arms around my neck and hearing my little girl say "I don't know what I would do without you, Mommy"

6. What's a product you've noticed in the grocery store that you'd like to try, but haven't yet?

Ummm... drawing a blank here...

7. The author, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (aka Lewis Carroll) was born this week in 1832 (January 27th).  Which character from his celebrated novel, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, would you most like to meet, and why? Here's a link to a character list if you need help on this one.

I'll admit to not being all that familiar with Alice in Wonderland (did I hear my literary friends just gasp?!)  But looking at the character list, I'd have to say the Cook, simply because it would be fun to throw things!

So, I'd like to hear from my friends who work outside the home and still have kids at home.  I've been offered a full time position, with good benefits...which is huge on many levels... but I"m having a hard time letting go of my job that I've had for the past 16 years - mainly, being home for my kids, and when they are off from school, I'm off with them and we can do things together.  But... we need for me to work.  And this job is a good one, that I would be good at.  So my question for you, my friends, is this... how do you balance two working parents and active kids schedules?  How does summer vacation time work for you?  I am blessed that my husband now works from home 80% of the time, so he's there... I guess I'm the one who is having a hard time letting go.  Any words of advice?
