Grand Ole Hodgepodge

Greetings from the beach house in California, where upon entering your brain turns to mush, time has no meaning or purpose, and all worries melt off in glorious abandon... ahhh... so forgive me if my answers to this week's Hodgepodge aren't particularly thoughtful or inspirational... I'm on vacation!  :-)  And if you feel so inclined, leave me a note letting me know you stopped by... and then head over to Joyce's to see her original answers!  Happy 4th of July everyone!

1. What makes you stand to your feet and cheer?

The National Anthem.  Veterans.  Soldiers.  Touchdowns.  Homeruns.  My kids in a school play.  My husband coming home from war!  (4 more months and counting!)

2. What's your favorite patriotic song?

Oh my goodness... so many of them... America the Beautiful and God Bless America... both make me tear up!  The Star Spangled Banner... God Bless the USA by Lee Greenwood... oh my goodness, getting teary just thinking of them!

3. Do you believe that opposites attract? If you have a significant other are you opposites?

I definitely think that opposites can attract - in some way, they can compliment each other and their different strengths combine to result in a stronger union.  My husband and I have some opposites - he was brought up rural, I was brought up big city, for example.  But where it matters - religion, parenting styles, money decisions, we are pretty similar.

4. You're going to get a behind the scenes look someplace...where would you like that someplace to be?

OK, so I know Joyce meant an actual place, like a palace or castle or Paris Hilton's shoe closet... but honestly, this is what came to my mind, so I'm sticking with it...

The birth of Christ... I would have loved to be there!

5. How far would you have to travel to ride a carousel (merry-go-round)?

Um, right now we are still traveling on our masochist, I mean, pleasure vacation through CA... so I have no idea where the nearest carousel is!  Which is fine by me... the only one who enjoys carousels still is my mother and grandmother!

6. When was the last time you saw fireworks? What was the occasion? Do you enjoy fireworks?

The last time I saw fireworks was last 4th of July, at a park in Salt Lake City with my in-laws.  And I bawled like a BABY as they played "God Bless the USA" over the sound system... and I got really really annoyed at all of the people around who were too busy talking and drinking and carrying on to realize that this was a moment we needed to savor, to stop and set ourselves aside, and think of those who are fighting for our freedoms and for the freedoms of others... and THIS is why we were gathered together... not just for the party atmosphere and for the fireworks... but to honor. To remember.  To be grateful.

7. Of all the 'beauty products' you own, what item do you consider to be the most overpriced?

Oh, probably the face-lift serum or some nonsense from Oil of Olay that cost a whole LOT more than over-the-counter stuff should... and then just ended up irritating my eyes, so I never used it again.  And of course, because I had used it, I couldn't return it.  Sigh.  So silly, really.  My DH would say that I spend too much on hair product.  To which I promptly stick my tongue out at him.  Even over Skype.  :-)

8. Insert your own random thought here.

In honor of the 4th of July... Independence Day... while my DH is bravely fighting the good fight overseas... and though we miss him so much it hurts, our pride in him and in our country washes over us and makes it all seem, somehow, worth it in the end...

Here's to you babe... and to all of the brave women and men fighting out there... and to all of the families back home who miss them more than they can say.  We love you.  Keep fighting the good fight.  We'll be waiting here for you.
