A Foggy Headed Hodgepodge

OK, so that's not the exact title that this week's hodgepodge is supposed to be... but let me preface this post, and ALL of the answers, by explaining that last night my dear friend Martha and I hosted a murder mystery party for our squadron spouses.  And oh my, it was SO much fun - I'll probably write more about it in my random thought... but suffice it to say, there was intrigue, there was murder, there was suspense... and Martha and I touched base this morning and agreed that we both feel like we've been run over by a herd of elephants (not that our friends are elephants - we don't mean that! - we are simply exhusted  exhasted  pooped.

Yawn.

On to the Hodgepodge, though... without fail!

1. February 22nd is National Be Humble Day...what makes you proud? What keeps you humble?

Had to laugh when I saw this was the first question - because today, it's my Aunt Pat (actually my hubs aunt, but you know what I mean) - she reminded me on Facebook just now that I hadn't done my weekly hodgepodge!  So thanks Aunt Pat - you keep me on my toes this morning!

What makes me proud - sorry, just saw that I was supposed to answer that first (see, I TOLD you I was tired) - my husband and kids.

2. Where is the catch-all (aka dumping ground) in your house?

The end of our kitchen counter.  Always.

3. Do you make it a point to visit State/National Parks when you travel or even in your own hometown? What's your favorite?
When I was a kid, going to state/national parks is all we ever did, camping every single summer.  Of course, I also grew up in California, where it seems like there is a new park every 100 miles.  So I took it all for granted.  Then my hubs and I were moved to the southeast, where sadly, there aren't as many state or national parks.  It was truly bizarre to me.  (Of course, LOTS of things were bizarre to me about the south - did you know that hush puppies aren't just shoes you wear on your feet?  I KNOW!!!)  :-)

But I digress.

When we travel now, it's usually to visit family, so not as much state/national parks, sadly.  But we did go to Yellowstone two summers ago, which was amazing.  I have so many favorites - but I think my favorite has got to be the Tetons.

4. How would you define honor?

I'm supposed to answer this question, being all foggy-headed today?  Ummm... ok, here's what is in my gut as I ask myself this question... Allow me to close my eyes and just type freely.

Honor is that core, the deep well inside of you that holds everything that you hold dear.  The place where your integrity lies, where all you hope for and dream of finds its root.  It is what defines you, and what you are willing to die for.  It speaks of something much bigger than yourself - the core.

5. Angel's food or Devil's food-which cake do you prefer?
Angel's food, with strawberries and freshly whipped cream and a splatter of chocolate please.

6. What's the most recent road trip you've taken? Where did you go and how many hours did you spend in the car? Do you like to zoom to your destination without stopping or leisurely wind your way there with stops along the way? What is your car snack of choice?
Does going skiing this weekend count?  We went just north of Boise, about 90 minutes away.  Skiing with the kids and hubs, and a couple of very close friends.  It was a lot of fun.  I wish that I was more of a natural athlete, though - it's somewhat humbling to be struggling on the smaller hills while my 10-year-old daughter who was just BORN knowing how to do every physical feat possible - goes on the black diamond runs!  i'm not kidding.

But I had fun anyway!  :-)

7. Recent headlines told how a preschool child in NC had their packed lunch from home taken away and a school lunch substituted by a school inspector who deemed the homemade lunch unhealthy. Reportedly the parent was then billed for the school lunch (chicken nugget meal) although an update to the story says the parent was not billed. The inspector was conducting a routine inspection of the classroom-he/she was not there solely to peek in the lunchboxes. The packed lunch contained a turkey and cheese sandwich, an apple juice box, a bag of chips, and a banana. You can read the story here. Your thoughts?

Um, are you SERIOUS??  I wish that all of the kids in our schools had lunches that were as healthy as what that child had in her lunch box!  I'm all for advocating healthier school lunches - and our district has done a very good job at that - but what that child had was perfectly balanced, and certainly wasn't worthy of being taken away and replaced with chicken nuggets, for pete's sake!  Good grief.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

So yes... last night we had a night of mystery and intrigue!  We did a murder-mystery party called Killing for the Crown - based on the Miss America pageant, and everyone was given a role to play!  We were nervous, not sure if everyone would really act their parts, carry out the objectives, and get into the bribery and such... but oh never fear, the very first guest came in and immediately said "You know, I just don't think it's fair when SOME contestants steal others' dance routines the night before the big talent portion and get away with it!"  Ahhh, we were in for a fun night!  We had bribery of crooked judges, an illicit affair between a judge and one of the contestants (in real life, a husband and wife - because we don't need THAT kind of drama, thankyouverymuch), a murder, and lots of laughter!  A great time was had by all!  Here is a picture of the cake Martha and I made as our centerpiece!

Now I'm off to take a nap!  See you next week, friends!
