An all grown up Hodgepodge...

Hello friends!  Thanks for joining the Hodgepodge this week - this set of questions are a bit more reflective questions... well, except for #3... gotta have a chocolate question in there just to lighten things up!  And actually, I almost got deep and reflective thinking about the potential for race relations in the whole chocolate/white icing thing... (speaking of which, did you all SEE this article?  About peanut and butter jelly sandwiches?  I'll pause while you check out the link... go on....................  Craziness, I tell you... some people have WAY too much time on their hands)  But I digress... to the Hodgepodge!!

1. What's the best thing about growing older?

These guys...

Little C

Middle C

Big C
having these three kiddos, getting the privilege of being their mom... simply the best!

2. When did you first feel like a grown up?

When we bought our first house, back in 1998 in Flagstaff, Arizona.  I don't care who you are - signing the bajillion sheets of paper with your signature, notaries, etc is enough to scare you to death and make you face reality very quickly!

3. Chocolate cake with white icing or white cake with chocolate icing?

What, no chocolate cake with chocolate icing?  Does it all have to be so black and white?  ;-)  I jest.  If I had to choose, I'd go with chocolate cake with white icing - as long as the cake was rich and moist and the icing was creamy, not plastic-tasting.  My name is Sally and I'm a chocolate cake snob.

4. What's the nicest thing a stranger has ever done for you?

Oh, so many neat stories here, I can't just pick one... little things, like holding the door open for me when I had babies in strollers or was on crutches (WHY don't more stores have automatic doors or handicap buttons to push?), a neighbor I didn't know bringing me dinner because she heard we were sick when my husband was deployed, a cop who didn't give me a ticket because I truly had had the worst week possible and burst into tears when he pulled me over (I wasn't faking, either!), to strangers lending a phone when needed in an emergency... We are all in the world together, people... lets help each other out... you never know when you will be the one in need (and hey, you could end up being the topic of someone's blog post! Hi Mr Policeman!)

5.  What's something you learned from your grandparents?
From my Grandma Claires, to always accessorize your jewelry well (I'm trying, Grandma!) - from my Papa and Granny, I learned to treasure family, and to love each other no matter what comes your way.

6. Wednesday marks a sad day in the history of planet earth-9/11...what's something you do (or can do) to bring peace to your little corner of the world?

Pray, and let other know you are praying for them.  Smile.  Wave at your neighbors.  Take homemade cookies to new neighbors who move in.  Be gracious in the parking lot and on the freeways.  Take the time to let people know just how much you appreciate them.

7.  Share a favorite quote, scripture, or song containing the word peace.

My friend Jui gave me this album back in high school, and I took it with me when I went on a missions trip to Guatemala.  This song was such a comfort to me, in the midst of such a cultural shock... I'll never forget laying in a hammock out in the courtyard, tears streaming down my face, letting this song soak into my tender soul.  In fact, I still listen to it whenever I feel overwhelmed!  (I couldn't find a good video, just close your eyes and listen!)

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

One year ago I had hip surgery.  It hasn't healed quite as well as the dr said it would, and today I had to go back in for another MRI and steroid injection.  While I was in there, the dr pulled 3 ccs of fluid from my hip... that would definitely explain the pressure and pain I've been having!  The bad news is, that means there is still something going on in my hip that is causing inflammation.  The good news is, this means that no amount of stretching and exercising on my part would have helped it (you know how it is... you start hurting and think "oh, if only I were more regular with my stretching this probably wouldn't happen)... selfish, I know.  But I'll admit I'm frustrated that I'm still having issues with it... I would appreciate your prayers that this is an easy fix, no further surgery required, and that the doctors would have wisdom as they interpret the MRI results.  (Having moved 6 months ago to a new state doesn't help either, as this new set of doctors doesn't know what was seen and done last year)  Thanks friends!

I just came back on this morning and re-read that last paragraph... I sound like I'm whining.  I really don't mean to be.  (Part of that whole "when did you feel grown up" is more like "when could you tell you were getting older" when my body refuses to heal as quickly as it would have, oh, 20 years ago)  It's all about perspective... I saw a great quote the other day that said this... "The things you take for granted are the things someone else is praying for" So that needs to be my view... sorry for venting like that!  I really truly am blessed...
