Bicycles, Gold, and Squid!

Happy Wednesday, friends!  We had an amazing weekend in Monterey (more on that later!) but it's good to be back with y'all!  Enjoy this week's Hodgepodge, and after you've left me a comment letting me know you've stopped by (!) hop on over to Joyce's blog where it all begins every week!  :-)

1. It's National Bike Week...do you own a bicycle? When did you last ride a bike?

I do own a bicycle!  It belonged to my best friend Erika- we were stationed together three times, our husbands roomed together during training, and our boys were (and still are!) best friends.  After Erika passed away 4 years ago, her husband said I could have her bike.  I love it... and I think of her every time I ride it!

2. What's something you learned in school that wasn't part of the curriculum?

That kids can be really really REALLY cruel on the playground, and while walking to school.  Sorry to say it, but it's true... and we need to work harder to protect our kids' hearts from bullying.

3. What's a food you've never tried, but want to try? What's a food you've tried and will never try again?

I've never tried frog legs, but would be interested in trying them!  Last weekend my hubs and I tried some amazing exotic foods - one I tried that I did NOT care for was a pork rind with ricotta cheese and pepper jelly... ummm, no thank you.  (My hubby was braver than me and tried squid spaghetti... which he didn't particularly care for)

4. Have you been more demanding on yourself lately or less? Why? Do you think that's a good trend?

I came to the realization this past weekend that I am still in transition here, and the emotional roller coaster of leaving the military and moving to this new life, job, culture, everything... it continues, and it's ok to take a break now and then.  So yeah, I'm going easier on myself.  And it's ok.

5. Who is your favorite book, movie, or TV show villain?

Favorite villain: Mr Gold (Rumplestiltskin) from Once Upon a Time - he is such a complex character and I love seeing the different layers, as he struggles with his desire for power and the consequences of his quest.

6. How concerned are you about identity theft?

Probably not as much as I should... I think there is a fine line between being careless (same password for every thing, posted on your computer for all to see) and being paranoid (everything encrypted, etc)  I have a basic 5-8 passwords that I use, or a combination thereof...

7. I saw this last question on Dawn's blog a couple of week's ago and asked if I could share. Everybody hop over and say hi, but first answer this...would you rather have an ordinary home in an extraordinary place or an extraordinary home in an ordinary place?

Definitely an ordinary home in an extraordinary place - you make your home wherever you are, and I've lived in small houses, big houses, in-between houses, but the location can make such a difference as to what your overall experience is there.

8.  Insert your own random thought here:

Look at this picture of my hubby and I (on the left), my brother-in-law, sis-in-law, and other brother-in-law at last weekend's Cooking for Solutions gala at the Monterey Bay Aquarium!  This photo ended up on the aquarium's website!  So cool... and oh my goodness, what a fun evening!  Exotic food, amazing wines, and flirtatious professional chefs... combined with good family time, laughter, and did I mention, the food and wine?  Oh my... I'm still recovering!
